In 1969 God used a man by the name of Gerald Andrew Echols, Sr. to begin a kingdom work. In May 1969, a small group of followers met in the living room of his home and organized Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ. In the month of July 1969, a place of worship was found in Highland Park, Michigan at 74 Kendall Street. In September of the same year the church celebrated its grand opening and the unveiling of a new name, Kendall Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ.
In February 1970 God inspired this servant to move the congregation to 12141 Woodrow Wilson, a larger facility to accommodate the growth the church was experiencing. While under the leadership of the now Bishop P. A. Brooks, in 1976 Pastor G. A. Echols, Sr. was elevated to Superintendent and Executive Secretary of the Jurisdiction.
After years of service, God directed this man to yet another move. To enlarge the borders of the ministry the congregation moved in 1981 from 12141 Woodrow Wilson to 16601 Tireman in Detroit, Michigan. God had opened a great door of 2 acres of land with the purpose of establishing and expanding His Kingdom ministry. The name was then changed to New Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ. To further expand God’s ministry several 501©3 corporations were started and in 1987 the mortgage was burned.
After serving God for over 50 years, God saw fit to call Supt. G. A. Echols, Sr. from labor to reward in the year of our Lord 2001.
The visions of this great servant of God were now passed on to the next generation. In 2002, his eldest son, Elder Gerald A. Echols, Jr., was installed as pastor of the church by Bishop P. A. Brooks, Jurisdictional Prelate of Northeast Historical 1 Jurisdiction of Michigan and General Board Member.
Truly the Lord has blessed this legacy, for now it serves as a wonderful church for the hurting, the dying, and the outcast in the community it is located in. To date this church has embarked upon a multi-purpose project for an end-time harvestall to the Glory of God.
